Sometimes we’re always chasing the next new thing in London that we forget about the brilliant places that have been here all along. One of the best examples is the completely free and seriously underrated Royal Air Force Museum London.
This is one of the best free things to do in London with kids. It’s a full day out that combines education, interactive play and real history, making it ideal for families looking for something fun without spending a fortune.
The museum is open daily from 10.00am to 5.00pm, with last entry at 4.30pm. Entry to all areas is completely free, although donations are welcome. It’s recommended to book your free tickets online in advance to guarantee entry. Opening times can change, so always check the official website before visiting.

Getting there is easy using public transport. The nearest Underground station is Colindale on the Northern Line in Zone 4. Make sure you get off at Colindale rather than Hendon Central. If you are travelling by train, Mill Hill Broadway is the closest station, around a 20 minute walk from the museum.
Inside, there is plenty to keep children entertained. Younger visitors can explore and climb mini models of iconic aircraft including the Vickers Vimy, Spitfire and Sea King helicopter. There is also a child friendly version of the historic Grahame White building designed for hands on play, helping to bring the experience to life.
Families can also borrow a free SEND family backpack from Hangar 1 at the admissions desk. These include sensory items such as smell pots, a squishy plane and binoculars to help make the visit more engaging and accessible.

The museum is not just for younger children. Older kids and adults will enjoy seeing real aircraft up close, including the Battle of Britain Fighter Four and the British Aerospace Harrier GR9A, known for its vertical take off. These exhibits give a powerful insight into aviation history and are genuinely impressive to see in person.
There are also optional paid extras if you want to enhance your visit. The 4D theatre and flight simulators offer a more immersive experience, and there is a brand new soft play area for younger children, which is also a paid extra.
If you are driving, parking is available on site. Charges are £8.50 for up to 3 hours and £11.00 for 3 to 6 hours. Parking can feel expensive, so taking public transport is often the better option.
This is a brilliant option for a family day out in London. It is educational, interactive and completely free, which makes it stand out even more.
Yes, there is always something new opening in London, but don’t forget about the old gems.
