If you have a child who is even slightly obsessed with space, this is one of those London experiences that is genuinely worth adding to your list.
Astronomers Take Over, located inside the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, is a brand new interactive space experience designed with families in mind. It is not huge, and that is probably the first thing to know, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in how hands on and engaging it is.
This is not a walk around and look at things type of exhibition. It is very much about getting involved. Kids are encouraged to try, test and explore, which makes a big difference, especially if you have children who get bored easily.

One of the fun parts is trying to land your own Mars rover. It is simple enough for younger children but still fun for adults too, and seeing real images from Mars adds that extra layer that makes it feel more than just play. There are also interactive elements like using a starlight splitter and stepping inside a galaxy style installation.
The staff, known as explainers, really stood out. They are walking around in astronaut style suits so you cannot miss them, and they actually take the time to explain what is going on in a way that children understand. It does not feel forced or scripted, it just feels like they genuinely enjoy what they are doing, which makes the whole experience better.
There is also an alternative planetarium style experience running while the main one is closed, so you still get that immersive space element, which is a nice touch and means you are not missing out.

Now, in terms of size, it is on the smaller side. You are not going to spend hours in here. But for around £8 per ticket, it is very good value, especially when you consider everything else you can do around it.
Because once you are done, you are already in one of the nicest parts of London. The rest of the National Maritime Museum is free to explore, and just outside you have a really good playground that is perfect for letting kids run around afterwards. Greenwich itself is just a great area for a day out, so it is easy to turn this into a full day without spending loads.
Located at National Maritime Museum, Romney Road, Greenwich, London SE10 9NF, it is really easy to get to. The closest station is Cutty Sark on the DLR, which is about a 5 to 10 minute walk and the most convenient option. You can also use Maze Hill or Greenwich station, both of which are within walking distance depending on your route.
This is best suited for children aged four and above, especially those who are into space, planets and anything hands on. If your child loves interactive experiences where they can actually do things rather than just look, they will really enjoy this.
Overall, Astronomers Take Over is one of those smaller London exhibitions that quietly delivers. It is engaging, well thought out, and priced in a way that makes it feel accessible. For families looking for a fun and educational day out in London, it is definitely worth checking out.
