Kids Will Love It. You Might Survive It. My Smurfs movie REVIEW

The new Smurfs movie is out July 18th, and the blue crew are venturing into the real world. When Papa Smurf is kidnapped by the evil wizard Gargamel and his even more chaotic brother Razamel, it’s up to Smurfette to lead the rescue mission. With help from a few new friends, the Smurfs have to figure out what truly makes them who they are in order to bring Papa Smurf back and save their future.

Let’s be real. Kids will love it. It’s animated, it’s loud, it’s colourful and full of silly chaos. Unless your child is ridiculously picky, they’ll have a great time. But if you’re the adult paying for the tickets, what’s in it for you?

It’s fine. There are some funny bits and the pacing is decent. It didn’t blow me away, but it wasn’t painful to watch either. One of the biggest selling points for adults is the fact that Rihanna voices Smurfette. Yes, Rihanna. And even better, she’s behind some of the soundtrack too. If you’re a fan, this might be the only way you hear new Rihanna music this year, so it could be worth watching just for that.

The BBFC has rated the film U, meaning it’s suitable for all ages. It has very mild violence, threat, rude humour and some mild language, but nothing that would cause concern. The running time is around 92 minutes, which is pretty ideal for kids. Not too long, not too short, and enough going on to keep them entertained without any meltdowns.

One of the funniest parts for me came right at the end when the Smurfs started doing popular TikTok dances. Completely ridiculous but actually made me laugh. All in all, if you need a family-friendly film to fill a rainy afternoon, this one does the job.
