The Lightning Thief REVIEW – Percy Jackson Fans, This Is for You!

Last night, we attended The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical at the Other Palace Theatre in London, and it was an unforgettable experience. If you’re searching for a thrilling musical filled with Greek mythology, humour, and action, this show might be exactly what you’re looking for.

The musical tells the story of Percy Jackson, a New York teenager who discovers he’s the half-blood son of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. This revelation changes his life forever, thrusting him into a world of gods, monsters, and epic adventures. Whether you’re familiar with Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series or coming in with no background, like I did, this production has plenty to offer.

To be completely honest, the first 10-15 minutes were a bit slow for me, and I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy it. However, as the performance went on, the story gained momentum, and I found myself captivated. The humour was sharp, the singing was powerful, and the staging was innovative. The creative use of projectors for dynamic backdrops added a fresh visual element that kept the audience engaged.

What stood out most were some of costumes and the cast’s energy. I don’t want to spoil too much, but experiencing this production live is the best way to appreciate its humour and creativity. Even when a technical issue briefly interrupted the show, the cast handled it brilliantly, turning the moment into something light-hearted and memorable.

While not every part of the musical was perfect, overall, it delivered an entertaining and engaging experience. It’s especially ideal for audiences aged 8 and up. Parents should note that some scenes involving thunder, lightning, and mythical monsters might be a little intense for younger children.

The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is showing at the Other Palace Theatre in Victoria from 22 November 2024 to 2 February 2025. If you’re planning a visit, the theatre itself is modern and intimate, offering great views from almost every seat. However, if you’re seated near the front, be aware that the production uses significant smoke effects, which might not be comfortable for everyone.

The show runs for approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, including an interval, with ticket prices starting at £26. Whether you’re a die-hard Percy Jackson fan or new to the world of Greek mythology, this musical promises a night of laughter, adventure, and spectacular performances. Don’t miss your chance to see it!
