Moana 2 REVIEW: Setting Sail on Another Epic Ocean Adventure

I think it’s safe to say I wasn’t the only one stunned when the Moana 2 trailer debuted a couple of months ago. While we all knew a live-action remake of the original was on its way, a sequel was an unexpected and exciting twist. Over the weekend, we had the privilege of attending a preview screening, and I’m thrilled to share my thoughts with you. Fair warning—there are a few spoilers ahead, but nothing that would take away from the joy of watching the movie yourself!

In Moana 2, we see Moana embark on another thrilling adventure, driven by an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors. This time, she journeys into the far seas of Oceania, navigating dangerous and long-lost waters in a quest unlike anything she has faced before. The sequel brings back Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana and Dwayne Johnson as Maui, delighting fans with their dynamic chemistry and powerful performances.

One of the standout additions to the cast is Moana’s little sister, a lovable new character who is simply the cutest thing ever. Watching the special bond between the siblings unfold adds an extra layer of heart to the story, making their moments together some of the most memorable in the film. Alongside them, a host of new characters bring fresh energy, making the sequel feel both familiar and exciting.

While Moana 2 brings plenty of charm, the absence of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical genius is noticeable. Miranda, who was nominated for an Oscar for his work on the original Moana, did not return for the sequel. Though a few songs stand out—particularly the breathtakingly beautiful “Beyond” and the catchy “We’re Back”—the soundtrack lacks the same magic that made the original’s music so unforgettable. However, it’s still worth a listen, and the soundtrack is already available on platforms like Spotify. That said, I’d recommend experiencing the songs in the context of the movie first, as the story adds a lot of emotional weight to the music.

The BBFC has given Moana 2 a PG rating for mild threat. While there’s one creepy monster that might spook younger children, the movie is otherwise light-hearted and suitable for all ages. At one hour and 40 minutes, it’s packed with adventure without overstaying its welcome, making it a perfect length for family viewing.

A fun tip: don’t rush out of the cinema when the credits roll! There’s a post-credit scene that leaves you with a big question—could there be a Moana 3 on the horizon? I know I’d be thrilled if they continued Moana’s story, as the sequel leaves the door open for even more adventures.

If you’re wondering how Moana 2 compares to the original, it’s a tough call. While the first film’s songs are unbeatable, the storyline in Moana 2 is compelling in its own right. Both movies shine in different ways, making them equally enjoyable for fans. What I truly love is the continued celebration of Polynesian culture. Representation like this is so important, and it’s wonderful to see kids of all backgrounds finding characters who look like them on screen.
