Casting a Theatrical Spell: a REVIEW of the Marvelous ‘The Witches’ Musical at National Theatre

Excitement filled me as I penned this review for Roald Dahl’s musical adaptation of ‘The Witches’. A favourite book, a cherished movie—both the original and the modern rendition. It didn’t disappoint; now, it stands as my new favourite London musical.

Currently staged at the Olivier Theatre, National Theatre in Southbank until January 27, 2024, this production exceeded expectations. Hoping for a permanent West End transfer, I found it on par with, if not better than, the acclaimed “Matilda” musical.

My anticipation was well-founded, having recently enjoyed The Witches’ Adventure trail—a once-free drop in, now ticketed, but still free event. Check availability for slots here.

Staying mostly true to the original book with some delightful differences, the musical’s fantastic music, humorous moments, and outstanding cast voices, especially Cian Eagle-Service as Bruno, shone brightly. His performance truly stole the show.

From costumes to set design, this production ranks among the best I’ve witnessed. The portrayal of the hotel was especially breathtaking.

Featuring a sizable cast of both adults and children, everyone delivered exceptional performances. Special mention goes to the talented children who not only sang magnificently but also showcased impressive acting skills.

This is a definite must-watch; catch this incredible production before it concludes. Tickets start at £20 and there is also a chance for discounts with £10 Friday Rush tickets released by the National Theatre every Friday at 1 pm.

Geared towards ages 8 and up, it aligns well with the show’s potential scariness for younger audiences. With a runtime of 2 hours and 45 minutes, including a 20-minute interval, consider the age recommendation when booking.

Seated in the stalls, row F, seats 6-8, our view was excellent, enhanced by a free-of-charge booster seat for the little one.

Definitely go and watch the amazing production. You won’t regret it.
