REVIEW: Bubbles, Booty and Chaos – What to Expect from SpongeBob’s New Big-Screen Journey

If you’re looking for something fun to watch with the kids this December, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants is a brilliant option to squeeze in before Christmas, or even during that awkward Twixmas period when nobody has any idea what to do between Christmas and New Year’s. The fourth theatrical SpongeBob film arrives in UK cinemas on 20 December, perfectly timed for families who need an easy, entertaining day out.

The plot follows SpongeBob as he attempts to prove he’s finally a “big guy”. Determined to show Mr Krabs he’s brave, he heads to the deepest depths of the ocean to face off against the legendary Flying Dutchman. This becomes the core of the story, and if you’re familiar with the series, you’ll already know to expect the usual chaos, nonsense and wild humour that makes SpongeBob… SpongeBob.

One moment that’s guaranteed to stick with you is the song “Big Guy”, performed by Ice Spice. It’s ridiculously catchy and will almost definitely end up on repeat in the car on the way home. Just a quick reminder for parents: Ice Spice does not usually make music for children, so if you’re not familiar with her, avoid letting the kids explore her full catalogue afterwards.

As for the film overall, children will absolutely love it. It’s loud, silly, colourful and full of the type of humour the SpongeBob universe is known for. For adults, enjoyment really depends on your sense of humour. If you grew up watching SpongeBob, you’ll appreciate the nostalgia and the familiar silliness. If it’s not normally your thing, you might find it a bit of an acquired taste, but still fun enough to sit through with the kids.

The movie runs for 96 minutes, which is ideal for keeping little ones entertained without losing their attention. The BBFC has rated it PG for mild threat, mild violence and rude humour, which is very much in line with previous SpongeBob films and episodes.

The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants is out in UK cinemas on 20 December. Let me know if you’ll be watching this one over the Christmas holidays.
