Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre REVIEW: A Whizzpopping Adventure

Tucked away in the charming village of Great Missenden, just outside of London, the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre is a dream for fans of all ages. Whether your child has just discovered The BFG or you grew up quoting Matilda, this little museum packs a lot of magic into a compact space.

Give yourself at least two hours to explore—more if you’re planning to join one of their brilliant paid workshops. It’s hands-on, creative, and bursting with Roald Dahl’s signature mischief. One of the first things visitors encounter? Giant chocolate doors that actually smell of chocolate. Willy Wonka would be proud.

Inside, kids can dive into storytelling sessions, get crafty, dress up, and even make their own stop-motion animations. There’s plenty to keep curious minds (and wiggly bodies) busy, and it’s as much about learning and imagination as it is about fun.

When it’s time for a break, the Filling Station café serves up speciality teas, coffee, hot chocolate, sausage rolls, and homemade cakes—all sourced from lovely local suppliers. There’s indoor and outdoor seating, and you’re welcome to bring your own food too.

The gift shop is well-stocked with Roald Dahl books, quirky keychains, art prints, and unique souvenirs. It’s the kind of place where “just browsing” turns into “just one more thing…”

Getting there is easy. By car, it’s around 35 minutes from Marble Arch. Link Road Car Park is the nearest place to park, with a short stroll to the entrance. By train, Great Missenden station is less than an hour from London Marylebone, and the museum is just a short walk from there.

Admission is fantastic value—tickets start from £9.95 and include unlimited visits for 12 months. For families on a budget, £1 Universal Credit tickets are available when booked in advance online or by phone. Blue Peter badge holders (with badge and ID card) go free with a paying adult, and registered carers also receive free entry.

All in all, it’s a scrumdiddlyumptious day out that’s close to London, full of charm, and perfect for sparking creativity in little (and not-so-little) minds. A must for any Roald Dahl fan.
