The beloved Studio Ghibli classic My Neighbour Totoro has made its way to the London West End, currently playing at the Gillian Lynne Theatre (166 Drury Lane, Holborn, London WC2B 5PW). This breathtaking stage adaptation is easily the most beautiful and magical theatre production I have ever seen. Every moment was a joy to watch, and when it ended, I genuinely felt sad—it’s the kind of show that completely immerses you in its world, leaving you feeling peaceful and enchanted. I booked these tickets on the Fever app which is the best app to find fun activities in London.

Satsuki and Mei, two young sisters, relocate with their father to an old house in the countryside while their mother receives treatment in a nearby hospital. As they adjust to their new surroundings, they soon discover that their home and the nearby forest are filled with enchanting spirits, leading them on a series of exciting adventures.
Surprisingly, I had never seen the original 1988 animated film before watching the stage adaptation, and I’m actually glad I experienced it this way. Going in with fresh eyes made the production even more captivating.
One of the standout aspects of My Neighbour Totoro on stage is its incredible set design. The way the house was built—and the seamless way it was moved to represent different locations—was just fantastic. My description could never do it justice, but the transitions were so smooth and cleverly done that it truly felt like stepping into a Studio Ghibli world.
The puppetry in this production is another highlight. The different puppets, varying in shapes and sizes, were stunningly designed, bringing the magical creatures to life in the most spectacular way. The puppeteers deserve immense credit for their intricate movements, which made the puppets feel incredibly lifelike. Watching them work was mesmerising, and I can only imagine how physically demanding their performances must be—I sincerely hope they’re paid what they’re worth.

Unlike traditional musicals where the characters sing, this production takes a different approach. Instead of multiple cast members singing, there is one singer who appears throughout the show at different moments. Her voice is absolutely stunning, and she sings in both English and Japanese. Even though I couldn’t understand the Japanese lyrics, I found them even more beautiful and emotional.
Tickets start from £25. The show runs for 2 hours and 30 minutes, including a 20-minute interval. The recommended age is 6 and above, and children under 4 will not be admitted.
My Neighbour Totoro offers a limited number of £25 day seats for each performance in the Stalls, available exclusively via the LW website from 10am on the day of the show. Limited to two per customer, these tickets are non-exchangeable and non-refundable.
We sat in the circle, row C, seats 60 and 61, and had a fantastic view of the entire stage.
My Neighbour Totoro is a theatre experience filled with humour, beauty, and emotion. There are plenty of lighthearted and funny moments, as well as touching scenes that may bring a tear to your eye. It’s a production that stays with you long after the final curtain call.
This is a show I would 100% recommend to anyone, whether you’re a fan of Studio Ghibli or completely new to the story. I’m already itching to watch it again because, honestly, it’s one of the best productions I have ever seen in my life.
I took my then 4 year old to the Barbican a couple of years ago, it was so good it’s not a surprise they brought it back! She was & still is a big Studio Ghibli fan, lots of them are on Netflix. There were some younger kids there allowed it but I think 4/5+ is a good guidance
