There’s a new afternoon tea in town—The Twits Afternoon Tea, inspired by Roald Dahl’s classic tale, “The Twits.” This unique experience is currently offered at Marriott London County Hall, just a short walk from Waterloo Station.
Before diving into the details, I should mention that your afternoon tea may differ slightly from ours due to my nut allergy. The staff were excellent in ensuring my tea was nut-free. If you have any allergies or dietary requirements, it’s best to inform them before booking so they can confirm what’s available for you. Keep in mind, though they accommodate dietary needs, the themed elements may not be as prominent. Instead, they incorporate aspects of their traditional afternoon tea at The Library to ensure safety.
Now, let’s talk about the price—something everyone is curious about. As you might expect, themed afternoon teas in London aren’t cheap, and this one is no exception. Prices start at £65 for the adult tea and £45 for the children’s tea.
You can find the children’s menu [here] and the adults’ menu [here].
Moving on to the savoury portion of the afternoon tea, our favourites included the bird pie, a delicious combination of chicken, leek, and ham. The playful touch of bird legs sticking out of the pie added to the charm. The fish finger was also a hit, and the green cheese and mouldy cornflakes (actually orzo and chive arancini) were absolutely delicious—definitely my top savoury bite.
Next were the scones. You’ll receive two—either buttermilk or Marmite—but it’s a surprise until you try them. The buttermilk scone was delightful, but the Marmite scone wasn’t to our taste. My daughter and I both agreed it wasn’t for us.
As for the sweet treats, our selection differed from what’s on the menu due to my allergies. However, we thoroughly enjoyed the carrot cake and brownie that were served.
Of course, there’s a wide selection of teas. I opted for the vanilla rooibos, which was perfect. My daughter chose the Skillywiggler lemonade with frogspawn—essentially lemonade with apple pearls—which she loved.
Overall, it’s a lovely afternoon if you have children who aren’t picky eaters. While it’s a bit pricey, the attention to detail in the decorations and the room’s ambience is impressive. Children also receive an activity booklet with colouring pencils to keep them entertained while waiting for their tea, which adds a nice touch. I think your kids will enjoy it too!
