80+ Free Summer 2024 Activities for Kids and Families in London

London is certainly an expensive city, but it’s brimming with free fun if you’re willing to do a bit of research. If not, that’s where I come in. I’ve compiled a list of all the FREE activities you can enjoy with your kids this summer, covering the months of July, and August.

1. UNIQLO Tate Play Oscar Murillo, The Flooded Garden

2. Family Fete & Museum Takeover

3. Stepney City Farm Summer Holiday Session: Young People’s Farm Experience

6. Drop-In Free Family Activity: Medieval Soap Making with Storytelling

Using medicinal herbs from the garden, you and your family can make your own medieval soap to take home! Storytelling will take place from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM. This activity is recommended for children aged 3-10, but siblings and babies are also welcome. For more information, click here.

7. Creation Family Fun: Nature Tales

Step back in time at Westminster Abbey’s medieval walled garden to start your journey into their story safari. Hear beastly bygone tales, create art inspired by imaginative creatures, and spot arty animals in one of central London’s most peaceful habitats. This event is free, but booking is required.

8. Woodford Fire Station Open Day

21 August 2024 11:00

Come meet the firefighters at Woodford Fire station open day! Safety advice will be offered, and you’ll learn about their work and get a tour of the station. Each open day is unique to its station, but there will always be a fire engine on display for everyone to explore and maybe even climb into.

9. FREE Apple Store Workshops

Discover free and entertaining activities for kids in London at Apple’s workshops, where you can create your own emoji, code your first app, or compose a theme song. While these workshops are entirely free, remember to secure your spot by booking in advance.

The diverse London locations, including Battersea Power Station, Regent Street, Brompton Road, White City, Brent Cross, Stratford City, Bromley, Regent Street, Bentalls Centre, and Covent Garden, offer convenient options. For more details and to book a session, check the provided link.

10. The Microsoft Experience Centre

Immerse yourselves in the ultimate gaming experience at The Microsoft Experience Centre‘s Xbox Lounge. The lounge is open daily from 10 am to 7 pm (Mon-Sat) and 12 pm to 6 pm (Sun). Add excitement to your Saturdays with the Minecraft Build Challenge for kids aged 8 and above, running from 1 pm to 2 pm! Your kids might even win a cool prize! While the Minecraft gaming challenge requires pre-booking on the website, feel free to walk in at any other time.

11. FREE Paddlesport

Experience paddlesport for FREE! Designed for young Londoners aged 8 to 17, these sessions run every Sunday from February 4 to October 27, 2024, 2pm to 3.30pm, even during school holidays. Perfect for beginners, with a maximum of 16 spaces per session.

Located at The O2 in London, the Virgin Media Gamepad offers the finest in the gaming world. It’s open to everyone for free, but if you’re an O2/Virgin Media customer, you can secure a spot through the O2 Priority app.

13. Summer Screens: Family Gaming – Canary Wharf

15 June – 18 August 13:00 – 15:00

Check out the free Family Gaming sessions where participants can engage in a variety of family-friendly games on big screens. All gaming events are free, and attendees can simply join in, with friendly stewards available to explain the rules. Player numbers are limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. These sessions are aimed at children aged 5+ and their families. More info here.

16. Garden Open Days at Hampton Court Palace

01 – 07 July 2024

Hampton Court Palace is offering free entry to its gardens from July 1-7, 2024. Visitors can explore 60 acres of formal gardens and 750 acres of historic parkland, experiencing the beauty and history of this iconic location. Find more info here.

17. Notting Hill Carnival 2024

25th – 26th August 2024

This year marks the return of Sunday as a day dedicated to children, with increased participation and a range of family-friendly activities and events. The main highlight will be the children’s mas, offering a vibrant and safe experience for the whole family. Check this page for updates.

25. The Rig: A Musical Family Playground

29. Art In The Docks

Every Saturday morning, your children can join a free art class. It’s free to join, suitable for all ages, and all materials and equipment will be provided. Please note that there is a maximum capacity of 30 for this event, and it operates on a first-come, first-served basis. The class runs from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and is ongoing. 30. Marvellous Makers: Summer Reading Challenge

31. Dawnosaurs: Relaxed Morning Visit

Dawnosaurs offers a free event tailored for neurodivergent children, including those with autism, ADHD, Tourette’s, OCD, and other sensory processing difficulties. 32. Early Birds at the Science Museum

Early Birds provides a sensory-friendly event tailored for families with members who require a quieter environment to enjoy the museum. 33. Richmond Park

I grew up around Richmond Park, and it’s always delightful to take a walk there in the summer, spotting the deer. It’s definitely worth grabbing your bikes or scooters and taking your kids there for a lovely day out. Why not pack a picnic blanket and snacks? Just remember to throw your rubbish away. 34. Holland Park

Holland Park is without a doubt our favorite park in London. It boasts a fantastic playground with sand and water play features, the beautiful Japanese Kyoto Garden, gorgeous peacocks roaming freely, stunning flowers and plants, and even a spot to play life-sized chess. 35. St. James’s Park

Another great park in London to take your kids to is St. James’s Park, right opposite Buckingham Palace. You don’t have to be a fan of the royal family to appreciate how beautiful the palace is. There’s a fun kids’ playground, plenty of spots to set up a nice picnic, toilets available, and you even have the famous pelicans there you can check out. It’s a great free London day out.

36. Pet’s At Home kids workshops

Every school holiday, Pets at Home hosts free workshops for kids where, depending on the store, kids can hold some of their animals like the rabbits. There are no current summer workshops available yet, but keep an eye on this page and book as soon as you see it available.

37. Apple Summer Camp

Once a year, the Apple Store hosts a free summer camp for kids aged 6-10. If you head to their website, you can register to be notified when their next summer camp starts so you can get your free tickets.

38. Hetty Feather Day: Art Workshop

6 July 2024 11:00 – 16:00

At the Foundling Museum, drop in to their free creative workshop inspired by the adventures of Hetty and her friends at the Foundling Hospital. Make beads and charms, then create your own piece of Hetty-inspired jewellery. You can pop in at any time from 11 am to 4 pm.

39. Tooting Bec Lido

40. Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Playground

While it can get a little busy at times, I thought it would be worth mentioning the Diana Memorial Playground. The playground’s centrepiece is a wooden pirate ship, and it also includes a sensory trail, teepees, a beach around the pirate ship, and various play sculptures. On busy days when the playground reaches full capacity, there will be a queue for entry. On warm, sunny days, the queue can start as early as 10:00 am. You can find more info here.

41. Kids Week

Not 100% free but worth mentioning! Kids Week is a special offer which is perfect for families with kids aged 17 and under. When accompanied by an adult paying full price, a child can attend for FREE!
And that’s not all! You can also bring up to two additional children along with the first child, and they’ll get in for half price! Mark your calendars for the Kids Week performances, which will take place from Wednesday 24 July to Friday 6 September. Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity to introduce your little ones to the magic of live theatre! Tickets will go on sale at 10am on Tuesday 11 June, so be sure to set your reminders!

42. Playtime The Mosaic Rooms

45. Tate Draw at Tate Britain

At Tate Britain, see your drawings come to life using their digital sketch pads. Take a seat at one of the desks, where you can see your finished drawing projected onto the wall. Once you’ve finished your drawing, you can save it to your phone or order a T-shirt to wear your creation. This is open daily.

46. FREE tennis for kids

58. Second Saturday Family Activities

On the second Saturday of every month, themed family events are held at the Guildhall Art Gallery. The upcoming Second Saturday Family Activities will celebrate Victorian fashions. This summer, a cool free festival is coming to the National Theatre! Little Angel Theatre invites families to craft their own elephant puppets. 65. Discovery Day The Francis Crick Institute

Head to the Crick on 20 July for a packed day of science fun, perfect for families with children aged 7–11.
