Verona is a charming city in northern Italy that’s famous for its romantic Shakespearean associations and its stunning architecture. But did you know that Verona is also a great place to visit with kids? From historical landmarks to family-friendly activities, Verona has something for everyone. Here are some tips for visiting Verona with kids:
Visit Juliet’s House
Juliet’s House is a popular tourist attraction in Verona, and it’s a must-visit spot for families. Kids will love the chance to see the famous balcony where Juliet is said to have stood while Romeo declared his love. You can even take a photo with the bronze statue of Juliet in the courtyard. And while you’re there, be sure to leave a love letter on the wall outside the house – it’s a tradition that’s been going on for decades. Entrance to the courtyard is free, only the entrance to the house is for a fee.
Explore the Arena di Verona
The Arena di Verona is an impressive Roman amphitheater that’s over 2,000 years old. Kids will love walking around the arena and imagining what it must have been like to watch gladiators battle it out in ancient times. And if you’re lucky, you might even be able to catch an opera or concert there – it’s a truly magical experience. Entry starts from €1.
Take a stroll through the historic center
Verona’s historic center is a filled with beautiful architecture and picturesque streets. Take a leisurely stroll through the city center and show your kids the stunning buildings and landmarks, like the Piazza delle Erbe, the Scaliger Tombs, and the Roman Theatre. And be sure to stop at a gelateria for some delicious Italian ice cream – it’s a treat that kids will love.
Enjoy some Italian cuisine
Italian food is famous around the world, and Verona is no exception. Take your kids to a local trattoria and let them try some of the local dishes, like risotto, polenta, and gnocchi. And of course, no trip to Italy is complete without some pizza and pasta. Your kids will love the chance to sample some authentic Italian cuisine.
Visit the Children’s Museum
Children’s Museum Verona (CMV) is an interactive museum designed for children between the ages of 0 and 12, located in Verona, Italy. The museum offers a range of interactive exhibits and activities designed to encourage children’s creativity, curiosity, and learning. It was most definitely the highlight of our trip. It’s 100% a must visit! Entry is from €6. Babies under 12 months go free!
Unfortunately there’s only so much you can do in two days. I recommended checking out the Visit Verona website for some more inspiration.
Flights
Once again, I used Skyscanner to find some cheap flights. This came to £51.96 in total. I used TopCashback to purchase these flights and got some money back too! Brining hand luggage is what helps keep the cost down. I bought these bags from Decathalon.
We used National Express to transport us to and from Gatwick. It’s one of the cheapest ways to travel.
National Express offers direct connections between many UK airports and cities, making it a convenient option for travellers. The coaches run frequently, so you can usually find a time that works for you. You can also use Topcashback to book your tickets.
Hotel
I use hotels.com to book Hotel Villa Malaspina which was super close to the airport. I spent £139.44 for two nights at the hotel. This included free breakfast. To be completely honest, the breakfast was mediocre, but we still had a good time. Our hotel was exceptionally clean, the staff was helpful and fluent in English, and we enjoyed using the indoor pool.
Transportation in Verona
I used a taxi to get to and from the airport. It was a short ride, but a little pricey. It cost less than 30 euros each way. Within walking distance of the hotel is a bus stop that connects you to the city center. Bus tickets can be purchased at the shop opposite the hotel. The tickets cost €4 each and are valid for 75 minutes once validated on the bus. To get around, I recommend using Google Maps. I found it extremely helpful.
Monzo
I always use Monzo when we travel. Here are a few reasons why Monzo is a good option for international use:
- No foreign transaction fees: Monzo does not charge any fees for foreign transactions or ATM withdrawals, which can save you a lot of money on fees compared to traditional banks.
- Real-time currency conversion: Monzo automatically converts your spending into the local currency at the current exchange rate, which is updated in real-time, so you can see exactly how much you are spending.
- Instant notifications: Monzo sends instant notifications to your phone every time you make a transaction, which can help you keep track of your spending and prevent fraud.
